Sustainability 360°
Designing IKEA’s Global People & Planet Communication Ecosystem
Created for IKEA
01 — INTRODUCTION
Balancing Impact, Scale & Legal Compliances
IKEA's 360° People & Planet release was a complex sustainability initiative that originated in IKEA's retail stores. It needed to be scaled into a unified omnichannel experience across web, app and retail, simultaneously, across 15 markets. The scope included providing strategic design direction, building coherent communication across markets and ensuring legal compliance for environmental claims. The editorial and visual logic held it all together across simultaneous market launches. The challenge was to communicate an intricate sustainability initiative clearly, drive meaningful customer engagement and holding up against divergent cultural expectations and local legal requirements worldwide.

02 — MY ROLE
Scope of Work
As the Design Lead on this project, I owned the strategic design direction from brief to delivery, working across brand management, product, engineering, legal and sustainability teams spanning global markets. The project covered both direction and translation: converting a complex, multi-stakeholder brief into a design framework that would work across audiences, market-specific regulations and omnichannel touchpoints at the same time. This meant operating as a connective layer between teams with very different priorities and vocabularies, making design decisions that were as much about governance and communication as about interface.
03 — STRATEGIC DESIGN
From Scattered Content to a Coherent Hub
Sustainability content on IKEA.com existed as a fragmented collection of isolated pages and disconnected campaigns, with no clear entry point and no designed journey. The first priority was establishing structural logic before moving into design: defining what the experience needed to do, and for whom.
The answer was two distinct but connected pathways, housed within a unified Sustainability Hub:
INSPIRE PATHWAY
Education & Positioning
An education and positioning journey where users learn about IKEA's initiatives and the substantiation behind their sustainability claims.
ENABLE PATHWAY
Buying & Services
A buying and services journey that helps customers easily discover and buy IKEA products that enable more sustainable behaviours.
04 — OMNICHANNEL DESIGN
The Green Thread
This project began as an offline retail initiative that needed to extend into IKEA's digital spaces without losing coherence, building an omnichannel system where the experience speaks the same language whether a customer encounters it in store, on the app or across the landing pages online.
The unifying element was the Green Thread: the messaging and branding framework established by the Sustainability Team, built around five categories that remained consistent across every channel, every market and every surface, unified in messaging and represented through the same visual and tonal language throughout.
The five categories were: Use less energy, Use less water, Create less waste, Love it longer and Choose better food.

05 — STORYTELLING & BRAND
Making Sustainability Claims Clear and Honest
In recent years, sustainability communication has a credibility problem. Vague claims, greenwashing and impact language without substance are common and audiences have become skilled at filtering them out. IKEA's brand equity and decades-long trust within this space was an asset here and also something to protect.
Substantiation became a creative constraint across the Inspire pathway. Every claim was structured to answer the implicit follow-up question, moving users from headline to evidence without losing them to complexity. This shaped content architecture as well as visual design.
05 — LEGAL COMPLIANCE & ETHICAL DESIGN
Transparency Built In
Legal requirements for environmental claims, GDPR data handling, cookie consent and accessibility standards varied significantly by market and in several cases were actively evolving during the project timeline. Our teams partnered with our internal legal and compliance teams to incorporate legal requirements into the content design and communication framework from the start, rather than routing through approvals at the end.
GREENWASHING RISK
EU Green Claims Directive requirements shaped the content and communications.
GDPR & CONSENT
Consent architecture designed to be transparent without creating friction.
MARKET VARIATION
A modular content system allowed copy, claims and disclosures to cater to market-specific laws.
ACCESSIBILITY
WCAG compliance built into component specs from the outset.
06 — IMPACT & REFLECTIONS
Conclusion
The most valuable decision on this project was establishing structural logic before aesthetic direction. The Inspire and Enable framework gave every subsequent design direction on whether the decision served the user journey or just the deliverable.
Working across legal, sustainability and brand simultaneously showed that compliance and creative direction can coexist. The tightest constraints on this project shaped the work into something more rigorous and, ultimately, more trusted.
